Professionally designed 3D models for GPS Machine Control and Automated Machine Guidance
In today’s world, technology is the key success for many industries including earthmoving operations. Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) allows a heavy equipment operator to construct a road or site project by following an electronic 3D data model. The 3D model is the foundation for AMG. An accurate and detailed 3D model gives the contractor the reassurance and true benefit of the AMG system. It brings the design to the field, which reduces construction time and public safety issues during the construction phase. Unfortunately, all models are not the same and too many times the AMG system doesn’t perform to its capability because of an inaccurate model.
The contractors demand for electronic 3D models is overwhelming and pushing software developers to provide tools to bring the design to the field through a push and plug system. They are making progress, but the contractors need the technology yesterday and can't afford to wait around until it gets here. What does that mean to a contractor now? It means they have to find a 3D modeler that can create an accurate electronic 3D model from paper plans and electronic data at an affordable price in the least amount of time. As the demand increases for modeling so does the number of companies claiming to be model providers. There are many different ways to build a model, but making an accurate model takes knowledge and expertise of the overall modeling process. The key to an accurate model is to start with the most detail and end with the leanest most accurate plans provided.
The worst method for building an inaccurate model is using proposed contours to create a surface, shipping the model, and billing the client for data prep services – for a highway project no less. This method doesn't create a model accurate enough to run AMG in the field, leaving the contractor disappointed with the overall system. A roadway project is typically defined from plan, profile, typical section, super transition and cross section information. By using the correct work flow and combining all of these together, the model provides accurate elevations for every square inch of the roadway. High points, low points, transitions, intersections, you name it. In many cases, it’s not just a TIN model, it's the linear elements (alignments, feature lines, breaklines, etc.) incorporated into the 3D model. This preferred method allows the contractor to build the model on the ground.
